The squeak has to go
Time to get to the bottom of this squeaking.
I tried a new pump on the Westfield and it still squeaks, I kind of expected it to.
So, off to the internet for a solution as this is not the pump. After about an hour of checking all the forums I think I have the solution.
Stay with me here :-)
I knew the mark 2.5 MX5 had a non-return fuel system, what I did not understand was how that worked in the car. It appears that in the MX5 the fuel pressure regulator that keeps the pressure constant and dumps excess fuel was located in the fuel tank, an item not used in the Westfield. So, when the fuel system for a Mark 1 MX5 was setup I am not keeping constant fuel pressure, infact at tickover the pressure must be getting high, this would explain a squeaking pump as it fought against the pressure in the lines and hopefully the eratic revs at tickover. Once driving and using more fuel the issue is reduced.
I need to add a fuel return system to the Westfield to fix this as using the MX5 pump and regulator would be a massive job.
To this end I have ordered a Mark1 fuel rail which has a return line and a pressure regulator. I am hoping the bits arrive before the weekend so I can start the work.
